Ronan Deazley; Stephen W. Smith
R1,592 Discovery Miles 15 920 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The regulation of the body provides an important concern in law, medical practice and culture. This volume contributes to existing research in the area by encouraging experts from a range of related disciplines to consider the legal, cultural and medical ways in which we regulate the body, further exploring how conceptions of self, liberalism, property and harm inform and influence contentious legal and ethical questions about what we can and cannot do to or with our own bodies.

Labour Economics (Paperback, 2nd edition): Stephen W. Smith Labour Economics (Paperback, 2nd edition)
Stephen W. Smith
R1,983 Discovery Miles 19 830 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In the six years since the appearance of the first edition of Stephen Smith's book, labour economics has become a more firmly entrenched subject on the curriculum. Previously regarded as a subsection within industrial economics, there are now very few universities that do not devote a course to it in its own right. The focus of topics covered within it has also altered - the notion of human capital has now become much more central and microeconomic considerations are now as widely studied as macroeconomic phenomena.
The second edition will address these changes and give greater centrality to microeconomics to reflect current course teaching. With superb features such as case studies, end of chapter questions and further reading sections, this new edition will prove popular with all students of labour economics.

End-of-Life Decisions in Medical Care - Principles and Policies for Regulating the Dying Process (Hardcover): Stephen W. Smith End-of-Life Decisions in Medical Care - Principles and Policies for Regulating the Dying Process (Hardcover)
Stephen W. Smith
R3,262 Discovery Miles 32 620 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Those involved in end-of-life decision making must take into account both legal and ethical issues. This book starts with a critical reflection of ethical principles including ideas such as moral status, the value of life, acts and omissions, harm, autonomy, dignity and paternalism. It then explores the practical difficulties of regulating end-of-life decisions, focusing on patients, healthcare professionals, the wider community and issues surrounding 'slippery slope' arguments. By evaluating the available empirical evidence, the author identifies preferred ways to regulate decisions and minimise abuses at the end of life, and outlines an ethical theory which can provide practical guidance for those engaged in end-of-life decisions.

"Soul Custody" calls readers to pay attention to the state of their soul--and free it to thrive.Every day, inner and outer violence ravages the soul, leaving us weak, fearful, and malnourished. In "Soul Custody," Stephen W. Smith presents eight choices to help readers reclaim custody of their one and only life--choices about silence, community, vocation, honoring the body, finding one's true self, and more. As Smith reminds readers, allowing God to shape the soul leads to the deep, full, and satisfying life that God had in mind all along. This is not a self-help book. It is not a book of easy steps to a happy life. It is an invitation to the life God dreams for each of His children. It is a call to start living--to let the soul wake up to life as God intended.

I am Lazarus. And so are you.

The life of Lazarus is one of the most recognizable stories found in God's word. The chronicle of an ordinary man who found himself at the center of an astounding miracle. A divine process that fully revealed Christ's transforming power, through a resurrection that preceded His very own.

But what if the story of Lazarus holds powerful parallels for us today? What if his story of hope and heartbreak, expectancy and disappointment, death and life, is our story too? What if the transformation Lazarus experienced is available to you and me?

Stephen W. Smith presents a remarkable journey through the life of Lazarus. Smith offers eye-opening insights into the Christian life, as we encounter

A lingering Jesus
A life trapped in the tomb
The smell of the grave clothes
The need for others to help us
And the Voice of Love that calls your name

Come explore the life and legacy of Lazarus. Discover a story all your own. And hear the voice of the One who loves you.

Lying at the centre of a tumultuous region, the Central African Republic and its turbulent history have often been overlooked. Democracy, in any kind of a meaningful sense, has eluded the country. Since the mid-1990s, army mutinies and serial rebellion in CAR have resulted in two major successful coups. Over the course of these upheavals, the country has become a laboratory for peacebuilding initiatives, hosting a two-decade-long succession of UN and regional peacekeeping, peacebuilding and special political missions. Drawing together the foremost experts on the Central African Republic, this much-needed volume provides the first in-depth analysis of the country's recent history of rebellion, instability, and international and regional intervention.

Stephen W. Smith, John Coggon, Clark Hobson, Richard Huxtable, Sheelagh McGuinness, …
R2,274 Discovery Miles 22 740 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This edited collection is designed to explore the ethical nature of judicial decision-making, particularly relating to cases in the health/medical sphere, where judges are often called upon to issue rulings on questions containing an explicit ethical component. However, judges do not receive any specific training in ethical decision-making, and often disown any place for ethics in their decision-making. Consequently, decisions made by judges do not present consistent or robust ethical theory, even when cases appear to rely on moral claims. The project explores this dichotomy by imagining a world in which decisions by judges have to be ethically as well as legally valid. Nine specific cases are reinterpreted in light of that requirement by leading academics in the fields of medical law and bioethics. Two judgments are written in each case, allowing for different views to be presented. Two commentaries - one ethical and one legal - then explore the ramifications of the ethical judgments and provide an opportunity to explore the two judgments from additional ethical and legal perspectives. These four different approaches to each judgment allow for a rich and varied critique of the decisions and ethical theories and issues at play in each case.

The year 2015 marks the fifteenth anniversary of Thomas More's becoming Patron Saint of Statesmen and Politicians. Yet during these years no serious answer has been given by a community of scholars as to why More would be the choice of over 40,000 leaders from ninety-five countries. What were More's guiding principles of leadership and in what ways might they remain applicable? This collection of essays addresses these questions by investigating More through his writings, his political actions, and in recent artistic depictions.

Life is many things, but it is definitely not a flow chart. We prove it every day. We deeply long for change, but formulas and seminars don't get it done. The good news is, God is at work across the life span, encouraging us and empowering us to overcome the hurdles of our past, the challenges of our present and the fears of our future. The Transformation of a Man's Heart is a book of stories: twelve men write from their hearts about their own journey toward transformation. Gary Chapman, author of The Five Love Languages, shares his journey toward experiencing a transformed marriage with his wife. Ross Campbell, Christian psychiatrist and author of How to Really Love Your Child, discusses his heart's transformation in growing as a father with his children. Gordon Dalbey pioneered the men's movement in his Healing the Masculine Soul. Here he shares how our past must be transformed in order to experience all God has for us as men. James Houston, mentor and friend to many Christian leaders throughout the world, considers how his own journey toward transformation reflects the call God places on every man's heart. These and other leading men in their fields come alongside you in The Transformation of a Man's Heart, telling you their stories and pointing you toward the God who in the beginning wrote every man a happy ending. "This book is full of stories. Some will make you think. Others will make you cry. Still others will make you kneel. All will make you want to be a better man." (From the foreword by Ken Gire, author ofThe Divine Embrace.)
